The NOOR Family Violence Survivor-Advocate group is comprised of migrant and refugee women with lived experience of family violence. Created in 2018 in response to the Royal Commission into Family Violence, it is the only group in Australia dedicated to representing culturally and linguistically diverse victim-survivors.
NOOR stands for Navigating Our Own Resilience and means ‘light’ in Arabic. This name reflects our strength as survivors and our fight to shine a light on injustice and create systemic change.
NOOR’s purpose is to platform the voices of migrant and refugee women who have experienced family violence and is the only group in Australia to do so.
Members of NOOR use their experiences to inform policy, shape services, and influence public understanding. They advise government, contribute to consultations, support media and advocacy work, and help ensure that programs and reforms meet the needs of diverse communities.
“We will rock the system, amplify the voices of migrant and refugee lived experience for change and transform stigma and silence.”
Through media engagement, public speaking, and sector collaboration, NOOR influences the public narrative and supports reforms. NOOR’s work also guides the co-design of inTouch services, ensuring they are client-centred, effective, and aligned with strategic priorities
