Motivation for Change

Motivation for Change is inTouch’s early intervention program for men who use violence.

Motivation for Change (MFC) is a 20-session group program designed to support men from migrant and refugee backgrounds who have used violence in their intimate or family relationships and are ready to engage in meaningful change.

At its core, the program keeps the safety and wellbeing of women and children at the centre. It supports men to recognise their use of violence as a choice—one that has serious impacts on those around them—and offers practical pathways to take responsibility, challenge harmful beliefs, and develop safer ways of relating.

What the Program Offers
  • A structured, culturally responsive space to explore the impact of violence on families
  • Tools to examine and shift beliefs, attitudes, and behaviours that support or excuse violence
  • Activities that build skills for emotional regulation, communication, and self-reflection
  • A strong emphasis on accountability, values, and fathering
  • Safe and respectful group discussions that challenge harmful norms while fostering peer learning
  • Content tailored for CALD communities, with facilitators experienced in working across culture, trauma and settlement
How the Program Works

Each session is carefully sequenced to guide participants from recognising harmful behaviour through to building new habits. Men are supported to:

  • Reflect on the reasons behind their actions
  • Understand how their behaviour affects partners and children
  • Practice new ways of responding to stress, conflict, and emotional triggers
  • Commit to ongoing behaviour change in line with their values and goals
Through role play, discussion, visual tools, and real-world practice, the program helps men move from “talking the talk” to “walking the talk”—building the motivation, insight, and skills needed for lasting change.
Why It’s Different

What makes Motivation for Change unique is its cultural competency and trauma-informed approach. It doesn’t shame or instruct, but invites men to reflect, take ownership, and commit to a new path—guided by skilled facilitators who understand the complex realities of migration, community expectations, and identity.

inTouch is funded to run six (6) Motivation for Change Programs per year. The maximum capacity of each MFC Program is 14 men. All men participating in the MFC program receive case management support for the duration of the program to support their continued engagement in the program through to completion.

Programs are delivered in language. The language is based on referral patterns from community. Programs are run online, in person or as a hybrid of in person and online.
