Description

This session will support practitioners to build a clearer understanding of how coercive control is uniquely experienced by migrant and refugee women, and what this means for safe and effective intake and assessment.

Through practical case examples and guided reflection, participants will explore how coercive control can be linked to migration pathways, visa status, language barriers, and social isolation. The session will focus on helping practitioners recognise early signs of non-physical abuse (such as restricted movement, surveillance, and threats related to immigration or community reputation) and respond with curiosity, safety, and cultural sensitivity.

Participants will leave with tools and language they can apply during intake conversations to identify risk and build trust, even when clients don’t use the language of “violence” or “abuse.”

Learning Outcomes:

  • Identify how coercive control can manifest in the lives of migrant and refugee women during early service engagement.
  • Recognise the role of migration-related systems (e.g. visas, family sponsorship, cultural isolation) in enabling coercive control.
  • Use safe, respectful, and culturally responsive approaches to explore control and fear during intake and assessment.

Important: To ensure an interactive and engaging one-hour with our practitioner, each session is limited to 20 participants. To give everyone a fair chance, we ask that only one practitioner per organisation signs up. Please only register if you can fully commit to attending and actively participating, with your camera on/ready to interact with our speaker.

When registering, kindly use your work email address as inTouch will only approve registrations from official accounts. We’re excited to have you be part of this practical learning experience!
