Refuge Sector: Culturally Responsive Practice and Working with Women on Temporary Visa

This online training is designed for professionals in the refuge and crisis accommodation sector to enhance their ability to support migrant and refugee women and their children, particularly those on temporary visas who have experienced or are experiencing family violence. This training is only for staff working in the refuge and crisis accommodation sector. There is a cap of 3 professionals per site.

Description

 

The first half of the training explores the principles of culturally responsive practice, cultural humility, and intersectionality and how to apply these to practice. It explores the migration journey and unpacks some of the various issues that women from migrant and refugee backgrounds may face while accessing support in response to family violence.

The second half of the training provides professionals with a deeper understanding of the multiple systemic barriers experienced by clients/families from migrant and refugee backgrounds as well as referral pathways and support available for women on temporary visas.

During the training participants will:  

  • Reflect on their own professional practice using culturally responsive practice, cultural humility, unconscious bias practices and an intersectional approach. ​  
  • Discuss how systemic barriers and discrimination may impact on clients/families from migrant and refugee backgrounds to seek and sustain service support.​  
  • Explore and respond to the impacts of migration, visa status and complex family dynamics for migrant and refugee clients/families in their journey through intake, assessment, and safety planning.  
  • Apply the principles of culturally responsive practices when engaging with clients/families from migrant and refugee backgrounds experiencing multiple systemic barriers and discrimination.  
  • Apply the principles of culturally responsive practice when engaging with clients/families from migrant and refugee backgrounds experiencing multiple systemic barriers and discrimination.
  • Understand the importance of identifying the visa status of migrant and refugee women experiencing family violence.
  • Discuss the impact of visa status on family violence for migrant and refugee women and their children.
  • Identify different visa types, their conditions, obligations, eligibility for services and support.
  • Understand referral pathways and support available for women on various temporary visa types, and where to seek this information.
